"Is it cheating to use AI in a job interview?" is the question every job seeker is quietly asking, and a lot of the content answering it is written by people selling the AI. So here is the answer from the other chair. I have sat on a lot of hiring panels. Here is what we see, what we do about it, and why the copilot does not get you the thing you actually want.
Start with the scale, because it is real. CodeSignal's data showed cheating on technical assessments roughly doubling from 16% to 35% in a single year. Cluely raised $5.3 million on the explicit pitch of an invisible overlay that feeds you answers during interviews. By the end of 2025, around 70% of companies were using AI somewhere in hiring. AI is on both sides of every application now. Pretending otherwise is not the move. But "everyone is doing it" and "it works" are different claims, and the second one does not hold up from where we sit.
What tips us off
We are not running spyware. We do not need to. The tells are behavioral, and once you have seen them a few times they are hard to miss.
The latency. Real answers start messy. A person who actually did the work begins talking before they have the whole sentence planned, backs up, restates. Someone reading from a screen has a tell: a small, consistent pause before every answer, including the easy ones, because they are waiting for text to appear. The first time, you notice. By the third question, the panel has clocked it.
The eyes. Even good actors drift. A glance down and to the side, repeatedly, on a timing that lines up with "I am now reading," is the single most common thing that makes an interviewer go quiet and start probing.
The answer that is too clean. AI-generated interview answers have a texture. They are structured, comprehensive, and oddly generic at the same time. They name the framework. They cover every angle. They do not have the lumps that come from a specific memory: the constraint you did not see coming, the thing you would do differently, the colleague whose name you actually remember. We are not impressed by the polish. We are listening for the texture, and the polished answer with no texture is a flag, not a flex.
The follow-up collapse. This is the one that ends it. A behavioral question has a script you can feed an AI. The follow-up does not. "Why did you make that call instead of the other one?" "What did your manager think?" "What broke first?" Those questions exist precisely because they cannot be pre-generated, and the candidate running a copilot either stalls while the next prompt loads or produces an answer that does not connect to the one they just gave. People who did the work light up on follow-ups. People who are performing the work freeze on them.
None of these alone is proof, and we know that. We are not trying to convict anyone. We are deciding whether we believe you, and a stack of these tells means we do not. That is the whole game. You do not get rejected for cheating. You get rejected because the panel is not confident, and you never find out why.
What we actually do about it
There is rarely a confrontation. Confrontations are awkward and legally fraught and, frankly, beneath the point. Here is what happens instead.
A quiet downgrade. The most common outcome. The panel debrief includes some version of "something felt off, the answers did not hold up under pressure," and the candidate moves to the bottom of the stack. No accusation. No feedback. Just a no.
A curveball, on purpose. When an interviewer suspects a script, they stop asking script-able questions. They ask you to react to something. To critique a plan. To work a problem out loud with no preamble. To go three follow-ups deep on a story you just told. A copilot is slow and generic in exactly that situation, and an interviewer who wants to know will steer there.
A knowledge probe. "You mentioned you used X. Walk me through why you picked it over Y, and what you would change about how you set it up." Someone who actually used the thing has opinions. Someone who name-dropped it because the AI did has a Wikipedia summary, and the difference is audible.
More panelists, and in person. If a hiring team is worried about live assistance, the final round gets bigger and moves to a room. This is not theoretical. Google and McKinsey reintroduced in-person rounds in part to take the second screen off the table. Expect more of that, especially for final rounds and for roles where the interview is a tight proxy for the work.
The takeaway: the harder you lean on a tool in the room, the more the room adapts to defeat it. You are not gaming a static system. You are tipping off a panel of people whose job is to read other people.
What it costs you when it works
Say it works. Say nobody clocks it and you get the offer. Now you have the job, and the job does not come with a copilot.
The cost shows up later, and it is worse for being delayed. Month three, the work that your interview answers described is now your actual work, and the gap between "I can describe this competently" and "I can do this competently" is the gap your team is now absorbing. Sometimes that gap closes, fast, because you were capable all along and just nervous. Often it does not, and what follows is a quiet performance conversation, then a less quiet one, then a separation during the probation period that exists for exactly this. The recruiter who championed you tells the next recruiter why it did not work out. That story has legs.
And here is the part that the copilot pitch never mentions: even in the best case, you did not win anything. You spent real effort and money to land in a job you are not ready for, surrounded by people who will figure that out. The interview was never the obstacle. It was a (rough, imperfect) preview of whether you could do the work. Beating the preview does not change the work. Where the line actually is
The honest worry underneath all of this is "if everyone else is using AI, am I a sucker for not?" No. You are confusing two different uses of the same technology.
Using AI to prepare is not cheating. It is the smart version of preparation. Draft your stories with it, then have it pressure-test the logic the way a skeptical interviewer would. Drill the topics you are weakest on until the answers are reflexive. Rehearse out loud, get feedback on pace and structure, and do it enough times that the delivery stops feeling like a performance. All of that builds skill that lives in you and walks into the room with you. Using AI to answer for you, live, is the other thing. It does not build the skill. It rents it for forty-five minutes, and then the lease is up and you still have to do the job. We go deep on telling these two apart in real preparation versus real-time cheating, but the test is short: does the tool work before the interview or during it? Before, it makes you better. During, it stands in for you, and standing in for you is the one thing that cannot survive contact with the actual job.
The short version
From the hiring side: we can usually tell, the tells are behavioral and cumulative, and what we do about it is mostly just stop believing you, which is enough. The market is splitting into people who use AI to get better and people who use it to fake better, and the second group is easy to spot and easy to pass on. Be in the first group. Prepare like the interview is a preview of the work, because it is, and walk in with the skill instead of a teleprompter.
