Search "ChatGPT for interview prep" on Reddit and you'll see two camps. One says ChatGPT is the only prep tool you'll ever need and dedicated platforms are overpriced wrappers. The other says ChatGPT is fine for warm-up but useless once interviews get real, and you need a dedicated tool to actually improve.
Both camps are partly right. Neither is fully right.
This post breaks down what ChatGPT does well, where it falls short, what a dedicated interview prep tool actually adds, and how to decide which one (or which combination) fits where you are in your search.
The short answer
For early-stage prep (you're 4+ weeks out, no interviews scheduled, exploring the market): ChatGPT is enough. Use it.
For active prep (you have interviews scheduled in the next 2-4 weeks): you've outgrown ChatGPT. The gap between "I can write a good answer" and "I can deliver a good answer out loud, on the spot, with the interviewer staring at me" is the gap a dedicated tool closes.
The decision isn't ChatGPT vs. dedicated tools. It's which one is right for the stage you're in. Most candidates use both, sequentially.
What ChatGPT actually does well
ChatGPT is genuinely useful for a handful of things, and free if you already have an account.
Generating likely questions. Paste a job description and ask "what are the 20 questions a hiring manager at this company is most likely to ask for this role?" The output is solid. It catches behavioral, technical, role-specific, and culture-fit questions, and it adapts to the seniority level you specify.
Drafting answers in the STAR format. Give it a story from your background and ask it to structure the answer as Situation, Task, Action, Result. It produces a clean draft you can edit. This is a real time-saver for the writing pass before you start practicing out loud.
Role-playing a text-based Q and A. You can ask ChatGPT to interview you. It will ask a question, wait for your typed response, and then ask a follow-up. The follow-ups are surprisingly competent because the model is good at finding the weakest part of your answer.
Explaining technical concepts. If a job description mentions a concept you don't fully understand (a specific framework, an industry term, a methodology), ChatGPT will explain it at whatever level you ask for. This is faster than searching, and the answers are usually right for foundational topics.
Critiquing a draft answer. Paste your written answer and ask "what's weak about this answer? What would a senior hiring manager push back on?" The critique is genuinely useful. It catches vague claims, missing metrics, and unclear narratives.
If your prep is at this stage (gathering questions, writing first drafts, refining the words), ChatGPT is an excellent free tool and you don't need to pay for anything else yet.
Where ChatGPT breaks down
The problem starts the moment you stop typing and try to actually speak the answers.
It can't hear you. ChatGPT's voice mode is improving, but it isn't designed for interview practice. It doesn't evaluate pace, filler words, vocal energy, or whether you sound rehearsed vs. natural. The thing interviewers are actually evaluating is delivery, and ChatGPT doesn't see it.
It loses the rubric. Ask ChatGPT to score your answer on a 1-10 scale across structure, specificity, and clarity, and it will. Ask it again the next day with a similar answer, and the score will be different. The model has no memory of how it scored you yesterday, so you can't track improvement across sessions. "Did I get better?" becomes unanswerable.
Follow-ups feel scripted. ChatGPT's follow-up questions are competent but predictable. Real interviewers ask follow-ups based on a specific thing you just said: "Wait, you said the project shipped two weeks late. Whose decision was that?" ChatGPT's follow-ups tend toward generic depth-probes ("Can you go deeper on the impact?") rather than the specific, slightly uncomfortable questions a sharp interviewer asks.
It has no role-specific calibration. ChatGPT will happily run a "product manager interview" or a "data scientist interview." But the question banks, the difficulty, and the expected answer shape are uncalibrated. Compare a real Stripe PM interview to a real Snowflake DS interview to a real Goldman analyst interview. They differ in fundamental ways. ChatGPT smooths those differences out.
It can't simulate pressure. This is the biggest one. The interview problem isn't "can you answer this question." It's "can you answer this question when your voice is shaking, you've been talking for 35 minutes, and the interviewer just said 'tell me about a time you failed.'" Sitting at your desk typing doesn't simulate that. Speaking it out loud, on a clock, with a tool that pushes back, gets closer.
What a dedicated tool adds
Dedicated interview prep tools are built around the things ChatGPT can't do. The good ones share three properties.
Voice-based spoken practice. You speak your answer. The tool transcribes, evaluates pace and clarity, and responds. The friction of speaking out loud is the practice. Most candidates discover that their written answers are good and their spoken answers are 30 seconds longer, full of "um" and "like," and tail off without a clear close. You can't fix that without hearing it.
Realistic, specific follow-ups. A good tool listens to what you actually said and asks a follow-up grounded in the specific. If you mentioned a metric, it asks about the metric. If you glossed over a tradeoff, it asks about the tradeoff. This trains the muscle that matters: the muscle of being responsive in a real conversation, not the muscle of reciting a prepared script.
Consistent scoring across sessions. Every answer scored on the same rubric. You can practice the same question on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and see whether your structure score went from 6 to 7 to 8. That measurable feedback loop is what turns "I'm prepping for interviews" into "I'm actually getting better."
Role-specific question banks. Software engineering interviews are different from product management interviews are different from finance technicals. A dedicated tool calibrated to a specific role asks the questions that role's interviewers actually ask, at the difficulty those interviewers actually use.
Progress tracking. You can look back at last week and see what you practiced, what scored well, and what didn't. ChatGPT has no equivalent.
If you're practicing alone (which is most candidates), the structured feedback loop is the difference between rehearsing wrong for a month and getting measurably better in two weeks.
Where dedicated tools fail
This isn't a one-sided pitch. Dedicated tools have real failure modes.
They cost money. A dedicated tool is $20 to $150 per month. ChatGPT Plus is $20 per month. ChatGPT free is free. If you're early in a search with no scheduled interviews, paying for a dedicated tool is premature.
The market has bad actors. Some "AI interview tools" are real-time copilots that run during live interviews and feed you answers. We don't recommend these and we don't build one. The interview is a sample of the work; cheating past the sample puts you in a job you can't actually do.
Quality varies wildly. A few dedicated tools have been credibly reported to freeze or crash mid-session, charge aggressive auto-renewal fees that are hard to cancel, or generate generic feedback that's worse than what you'd get from a careful read of your own transcript. The dedicated category isn't automatically the safer choice; it depends on which dedicated tool. Read recent reviews before paying for anything that requires a credit card up front, and prefer tools with a real free trial.
Some are ChatGPT wrappers with a logo. The cheaper end of the market is sometimes a thin wrapper around the OpenAI API with a nicer interface. If a tool charges $30 per month and the only thing you can't replicate in ChatGPT for free is a slightly prettier UI, you're paying for the UI.
They can over-fit. If you practice the same 10 questions to a high score, you might walk into an interview and get a question you've never rehearsed and choke. The point of practice is to build adaptive judgment, not to memorize answers. A good tool varies the questions; a bad one drills the same set.
When ChatGPT is enough
Use ChatGPT and skip the dedicated tool if any of these are true:
- You have no interviews scheduled and don't expect one in the next 4 weeks.
- You're at the "what jobs even fit me" stage, not the "I have a Tuesday interview" stage.
- You're researching a role you might apply to and want to understand what the interviews look like.
- You're refining written content (resume bullets, cover letters, LinkedIn summary) and want a writing partner.
- You're cash-strapped and prep is the lowest-priority line item this month.
For early prep, ChatGPT does ~80% of what a dedicated tool does at zero marginal cost. Use it.
When a dedicated tool starts paying for itself
Switch to (or add) a dedicated tool when any of these are true:
- You have interviews scheduled in the next 2-4 weeks.
- You've already done the writing pass with ChatGPT and now need to actually speak the answers convincingly.
- You've bombed an interview recently and want to know specifically what to fix.
- The role is high-stakes (a jump in seniority, a target company, a comp bracket that materially changes your life).
- You're a non-native English speaker and need spoken-fluency reps you can't easily get from text.
- You hate practicing and need an external system that gives you structured sessions instead of "I'll prep when I feel like it."
The math is simple. A dedicated tool at $20 per month for two months is $40. An accepted offer that's $5,000 higher because you negotiated from a stronger interview performance pays that 125 times over.
How to use both
The best workflow we've seen from candidates who land offers fast:

Week 1, ChatGPT. Generate your question bank. Draft your STAR stories. Write first-pass answers to the 15-20 most likely questions. Critique your drafts. End the week with a written prep document.

Week 2-3, dedicated tool. Speak the answers out loud against a real follow-up engine. Track your scores. Rehearse the questions you score lowest on. ChatGPT is the writer. The dedicated tool is the rehearsal hall. The interview is the show.
The honest verdict
If you take one thing from this post: don't pay for a dedicated tool you don't need yet, and don't try to gut your way through active prep with text-only practice when you should be speaking out loud with feedback.
